This is Pocket DrillPunk!

Pocket DrillPunk is my entry for LOWREZJAM 2022. The game runs on 64x64 resolution, to fit the Jam requirements, and then scaled 7x to improve screen readability. This is a procedurally generated drilling game with lots of RPG aspects, such as leveling up and learning new abilities, fighting enemies in a turn-based fashion, and creating strategies to defeat the bosses!

But here's the twist: you use the resources you gather when drilling to be able to use your skills in the turn-based combat! Different resources allow different skills, and some of them scale with specific stats! Play around different builds to win against each one of the three bosses!

And don't worry, if you lose you can always try again. You lose all resources, but you keep your level, skills, and you respawn at the latest checkpoint.

  Controls

There are multiple control schemes for this game.

You can play with arrow keys + Z to drill and X to jump, in PICO-8 style.

You can play with WASD and use the left mouse button to drill, and the right one to jump.

You can also play with WASD, using E to drill and space-bar to jump!

(Or you can mix and match the control schemes, all of them work concurrently)

Gamepad is also supported, but untested! (please let me know if there's anything wonky)

You can point the drill towards all 4 directions (up, down, left right). Additionally, there's a jetpack you can use by holding the jump button.

  Content

The game currently has 3 different "kinds" of levels. All levels are procedurally generated, which means they are always randomized upon starting. However, each level may have biases towards certain resources or spawns.

The levels are horizontally infinite, and each boss can be found at a certain depth.

 How to Play

  • Gather Resources.
  • Drill blocks with enemies on them.
  • Defeat those enemies.
  • Gain experience.
  • Level up! You can choose between drill power, jetpack fuel and max HP.
  • Please note that some skills scale off different stats!
  • The stats are also useful on your drilling expeditions, not only during combat.
  • Find and defeat the level boss!

   Credits

All assets in the game were made for the game, by me. The font is also custom. This game was made in 2 weeks. There are some missing assets because I didn't have enough time to make them (such as an intro music, a battle fanfare, etc). There is music and sound in the game, though.

Please let me know if you like it! Thank you all!

Hey Darren! Thank you so much for the kind words and for this video! It was incredibly entertaining and made me want to get back and play more games from the jam, there were so many interesting and innovative entries.

I still have to play your game as well! Things have been a bit crazy the past few weeks but hopefully I'll have more time next week. See you around, and good luck with your endeavors!

Congratulations on making this game !

I've played your game during a live that you can watch here :

The live is timestamped so you can go directly to your game.

I hope the feedback and live reactions will be useful. Keep it up !
This game is definitely in my top 5.

(don't hesitate to follow me on itch, twitter and youtube if you wanna help!)

I really want to try it out but for some reason the rendering is distorted for me :/ - it makes all text really hard to read

Oh, this is the first time I see this. I wonder if it has anything to do with browser/system settings. Do you mind sharing the resolution you're using? And, if possible, could you tell me if it distorts even on full screen? Sorry for that!

Do you mind sharing the resolution you’re using?

It happens both on my Macbook Pro Retina Screen (3456x2234) and my external display (3840x2160)..

And, if possible, could you tell me if it distorts even on full screen?

Yes it also occurs in Fullscreen

It also seems to be independent of the browser I use (Firefox or Brave (so basically Chrome))

Thanks a lot! I was able to simulate it on a virtual browser. I'll be able to upload a bugfix as soon as the rating period for the jam ends (I cannot update the game while ratings are ongoing).

Thanks… I’ll try and play the game then…

Love this concept, great gameplay. Great work!

Thanks, I appreciate it!

Very cool ! I like it

I'm glad you like it! Thanks for playing <3
